Introducing the Patron of the Celebrity Pig Theatre Company

Christopher Eccleston

The Celebrity Pig Theatre Company is delighted to have the highly acclaimed actor, Christopher Eccleston as their Patron. Christopher agreed to become patron after working with one of the company's actors, Dorothy Cockin, in the BBC2 drama production, ‘Flesh and Blood,.' which was first screened in 2002 He made his first appearance with the company in their physical theatre production of ‘Hidden Voices,' at the Green Room, Manchester, 2003. Christopher also took part in Celebrity Pig's short film entitled ‘The Making of Hidden Voices.' in 2004.

Born in Salford, Christopher trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama. He first came to public attention playing Derek Bentley in the 1991 film, ‘Let Him Have It.' Other film credits include, ‘Shallow Grave,' ‘Jude,' ‘Elizabeth I,' Gone in 60 Seconds,' '28 Days later,' ‘The Others,' and '24 Hour Party People.'

Despite being successful in films Christopher's first love still remains the theatre. To date he has appeared in, ‘A Street Car Named Desire,' ‘Dona Rosita,' ‘The Spinster,' (Bristol Old Vic), ‘Bent.' ‘Abingdon Square,' (National Theatre), ‘Aids Memoire,' (Royal Court Theatre), ‘Miss Julie,' (Haymarket Theatre), ‘Hamlet,' and ‘Electricity' (West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds)

Amongst an impressive list of TV drama productions Christopher has starred in ‘Inspector Morse,' ‘Casualty,' ‘Boon,' ‘Poirot,' ‘Cracker I & II,' ‘Our Friends in the North,' ‘Hillsborough,' ‘Clocking Off,' ‘Strumpet, ‘Linda Green,' ‘Sunday,' and ‘Second Coming' However, he will undoubtedly be remembered as the talented actor who brought ‘Dr. Who' back to life and resurrected a screen legend.

John Travis

John is a founder member of the company. He was also an actor with the New Breed Theatre Company, Manchester. John has appeared in various social club venues in the Wythenshawe area of Manchester as a mime artist. His lifetime ambition is to be recognised as a professional touring actor with the Celebrity Pig Theatre Company.

In Romeo and Juliet – a question of choice John has played a vital role in devising the script and contributing to dance and movement techniques.

Rose Travis - Community Nurse

 

Rose joined the company as a founder member in 1997. She would like to become a professional actor and star alongside Barbara Windsor in ‘Eastenders.' Her theatre appearances include, ‘Phantasmagoria; terrifying tales.' Spacearama,' (Forum Theatre, Wythenshawe), ‘Tea Shop Blues.' (Withington Hospital, Manchester), ‘If you want to sing out sing out,' (Burnley Football Club), ‘Reach for the Stars,' (Hough end Training Centre & Oakwood Resource Centre, Manchester),

For this production Rose has worked alongside Karen Stanton and Cathy McKee's in developing her chosen role as the Community Nurse.

Jason Skelly – Tybalt

 

Jason has been actor with the company since 2002. His ambitions lie in the performing arts arena where he would like to become a professional actor and dancer. Jason has a keen interest in music is particularly drawn to operatic singing.

Dorothy Cockin – Mrs. Montague

As a founder member of the company Dorothy has been starring in major productions since 1998. Her theatre appearances include, ‘Phantasmagoria; terrifying tales.' For her outstanding performance in ‘Spacearama,' Dorothy won the company's 1999 ‘Bernard Dolan Award' for excellence in drama. Dorothy's finest hour was being screen tested by the BBC and offered the role of ‘Janet.' in the BBC2 production, ‘Flesh and Blood.' She starred alongside Patron, Christopher Eccleston and other well known actors of both stage and screen in this award winning drama. To date it has been shown in a number of European countries and is being adapted for American TV.

Valerie Hughes – Juliet's friend - Val

Valerie has been actor with the company since 2002. She would like to achieve professional status both as an actor and singer. Her theatre appearances include, ‘Tea Shop Blues.' (Withington Hospital, Manchester), ‘If you want to sing out sing out,' (Burnley Football Club), ‘Reach for the Stars,' (Hough end Training Centre & Oakwood Resource Centre, Manchester), ‘Hidden Voices,' (Zion Arts Centre, Green Room, Manchester, The Met, Bury). Valerie has drawn on her own personal experiences in devising the script for Romeo and Juliet – a question of choice .

Trish Way – Cathy Capulet

Trish became an actor with the company in 1999. It is her ambition to become a professional actor and also a member of a music group. Trish is eager for the company to become independent so that they can perform in other areas of the country.

Trish's recent claim to fame was taking part in an interview on the Afternoon programme screened by Granada TV in 2005. She also met a number of stars from ‘Coronation Street,' and Lisa Riley (from Fat Friends/Emmerdale)

Barry Finan – Mr. Montague

Barry's love of drama dates back to his early childhood. He joined the company in 2000 with a burning ambition to become a film and TV star. Barry also has a great love of music from the 60s and 70s. Julie Sheridan – Juliet

Julie joined the company in 2002. She had been waiting for two years to fulfil her ambition to become involved in the performing arts. Julie made her theatre debut in

‘Hidden Voices,' (Zion Arts Centre, Green Room, Manchester, The Met, Bury). In taking a lead role in this production Julie has worked alongside dance consultant Lizzie Jibson in developing her dance and movement techniques. Under the direction and guidance of artistic director Caroline Clegg Julie's performance as Juliet is guaranteed to have a lasting impression on the audience.

Colette Wallace – Flo Capulet

Colette's interest in the performing arts dates back to her childhood days. She lists among her many hobbies listening to the music of Abba and watching musical theatre especially, ‘Grease.'

Having joined the Celebrity Pig in 2003 Colette made her debut performance in the company's physical theatre production, ‘Hidden Voices,' (The Met, Bury and the Green Room, Manchester) Colette also took part in the promotional films, ‘The Making of Hidden Voices,' and ‘Transition.' Radio performance - ‘the Big Day' (Wythenshawe FM). During 2005 Colette starred in the company's issued based production, ‘Where is Pandora,' at two national conferences, ‘Learning Disability Today,' (GMEX International Convention Centre, Manchester) and ‘Work and Employment, ‘(Phoenix, Salford)

Colette has used her keen sense of fun and humour in working alongside professional actor, Robert Maxfield, to devise her role as flo Capulet.

Andrew Brown - Romeo

Andrew is one of the youngest members of the Celebrity Pig Theatre Company, which he joined in the year 2000. His ultimate ambition is to become a professional performing artist on both stage and screen. Andrew's theatre performances include, ‘Tea Shop Blues.' (Withington Hospital, Manchester), ‘If you want to sing out sing out,' (Burnley Football Club), and ‘Reach for the Stars,' (Hough end Training Centre & Oakwood Resource Centre, Manchester).

For his appearances in the company's physical theatre production- ‘Hidden Voices,' (Zion Arts Centre, 2002, Green Room, Manchester, The Met, Bury, 2003), Andrew worked alongside two professional dancers in developing his undeniable talents as an expressive dancer His performance was said to have electrified the stage.

Andrew's Film credits include - ‘A Pharaoh Mystery (Cornerhouse Cinema, Manchester), ‘The Making of Hidden Voices,' and ‘Transition.' Radio performance - ‘The Big Day,' (Wythenshawe FM). In 2005 Andrew took part in the company's issued based production, ‘Where is Pandora,' at two national conferences, ‘Learning Disability Today,' (GMEX International Convention Centre, Manchester) and ‘Work and Employment, ‘(Phoenix, Salford). During the same year Andrew, along with other members of the company, was interviewed on Granada TV's ‘Afternoon' programme.

His most recent success was being commissioned to work with the Warrington Advocacy Service as a photographic model for their new information booklet on direct payments.

In the role of Romeo, Andrew's first appearance at the Lowry Studio will leave the audience in no doubt as to his ability in portraying one of Shakespeare's most tragic characters.

Gregory Harewood – Father Greg

Gregory is a founder member of the Celebrity Pig Theatre Company He was the first recipient of the company's annual ‘Bernard Dolan Award for Excellence in Drama.' Gregory has also been instrumental in promoting the achievements of the company by speaking at various venues in and around Greater Manchester. His main ambition is to become a professional actor and learn to play the drums. Gregory is also the company's treasurer and will be taking an active role in enabling it to gain charitable status within the near future.

Philip Snape – Paris

Philip joined Celebrity Pig in 1997 as a founder member. His interests include football (Manchester City supporter), popular music and travel. His ambitions for the company include being able to take part in touring productions in this country and beyond.

Karen Stanton – Occupational Therapist

Karen joined the company, as support worker, in 1999. She has also appeared on stage alongside the actors in ‘ Spacearama,' (Forum Theatre, Wythenshawe), ‘Tea Shop Blues.' (Withington Hospital, Manchester), ‘If you want to sing out sing out,' (Burnley Football Club), ‘Reach for the Stars,' (Hough end Training Centre & Oakwood Resource Centre, Manchester), ‘Hidden Voices,' Green Room, Manchester, The Met, Bury). Film credits - ‘A Pharaoh Mystery (Cornerhouse Cinema, Manchester), ‘The Making of Hidden Voices,' and ‘Transition' Radio performance - ‘The Big Day,' (Wythenshawe FM).

Since joining the company Karen has qualified as an occupational therapist but still finds time to support the actors, as a volunteer, in their weekly rehearsals. She lists her other interests as the visual arts, travel and socialising.

In this production Karen takes on a familiar role as an occupational therapist. She has worked closely alongside Rose Travis in delivering a sensitive and empathetic performance

Jeni Howarth-Williams - Veronica Do-little

The company is thrilled to be working, with Jeni Howarth-Williams, a Manchester-based actor of both stage and screen. Due to ill health, and, at short notice, she has replaced Stephanie Howarth in the role of Veronica Do-little. Since joining the production Jeni has enjoyed working alongside the actors of Celebrity Pig and has used her expertise in supporting other members of the company

Her Television appearances include, ‘Coronation Street ,' (1999, 2001 and 2005), ‘Emmerdale,' ‘Hollyoaks,' ‘Clocking Off II,' ‘Linda Green,' ‘Von Trapped,' ‘Children's Ward,' ‘Christmas Lights,' ‘Blue Murder,' ‘Cops,' ‘Wilmot,' ‘Seeing Red,' and ‘Crime Squad.' Jeni's stage credits list as ‘Salford-Stuffers (Willy Russell Award winning, Edinburgh Festival), Paper Boys (Studio, Salford), ‘With a Smile and a Song,' (Zingari Swing), ‘Sugar, Sugar,' (Black Sugar). Short films – ‘Things People Say (Granada Television), ‘A Neutral Act, (Won Royal TV Award – Dominic Murgia) ‘Gricers,' (BBC). She has also appeared in various TV Commercials.

Jeni recently won the Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for Best Performance in the Fringe Production - ‘Salford Stuffers,' at the Studio, Salford

Donna Baker – Benvolina

Donna joined the company as a voluntary support worker in 2005. She has extensive experience in working in the performing arts with children who are learning disabled and young people as part of the MAP project. Her interests include martial arts, swimming, theatre, travel and socialising.

In Celebrity Pig's 2005 production, ‘Where is Pandora,' at the Pavilion conference, ‘Learning Disability Today,' (GMEX International Convention Centre, Manchester), Donna played a pivotal role in supporting the actors to devise and develop this issued based performance. She would like to see the actors achieve their ambition in becoming a professional touring company with revenue funding.

Donna now takes to the stage in her first supporting role as Benvolina, Romeo's loyal and trusted friend.

Robert Maxfield- Arthur Capulet

The company is delighted to welcome professional actor, Robert Maxfield, in the role of Arthur Capulet. Robert is also a Manchester based actor of both stage film and screen. He kindly agreed to take on this role as a result of the sad and untimely death this year of one of Celebrity Pig's finest actors, Alan Jones. Robert has brought to the company his expertise, sensitivity and humour in supporting the actors to achieve a high standard of performance.

Robert's film appearances include, ‘Derek,' and ‘Van Boys,' (Double Life Productions), ‘Daddy Fox,' (Reform Films), ‘Home Ground,' (Sunlight Pictures), and ‘Fanny and Elvis,' (Scale Productions),. His Television credits are, ‘Where the Heart Is,' ‘Emmerdale,' ‘Heartbeat' ‘Cold Feet,' ‘Crimewatch,' ‘Chicks' and ‘Monkeez.' Robert's stage performances are ‘Pictures at an Exhibition and ‘Wizard of Oz,' (Feelgood Theatre Productions). He is also a professional contemporary, old time and folk dancer.

As a highly accomplished singer and musician Robert will be performing his own composition live for this production. He has also written the overture for ‘Romeo and Juliet – a question of choice'

Louise Morris – Lucia, Tybalt's sister

Louise originates from London and will graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University in May with a B.A (Hons) in Acting. Being familiar with the work of Celebrity Pig she decided to become a volunteer in 2005. Within a short space of time Louise has witnessed the high standard of work that the company has achieved. She is also a performing artist with the Aqueous Humour Theatre Company in Manchester.

Her Theatre/TV credits include, ‘Out of Time, (BBC), ‘A Night Before Christmas,' (Chicken Shed), and ‘Sexual Health (TIE) workshop (London Shakespeare Workout). Louise's productions whilst training list, amongst others, ‘The Art of Success, Hamlet, ‘A Midsummer's Night Dream, ‘ A Dolls House,' ‘Blood Wedding,' and ‘St. Joan of the Stockyards.' She has also taken part in a number of theatre workshops and is an accomplished singer, dancer and drummer.

Louise, in her first production with Celebrity Pig, as Lucia, has been working alongside Jason Skelly in developing his role as Tybalt.

Cathi McKessy – Tea lady

Cathi's background in the performing arts stems from her early childhood. As an Irish dancer, since the age of four, she has appeared in numerous venues around the Northwest. With her passion for Music, Cathi has been a singer and musician with both a 60/70s cover group and a traditional Irish session band. She considers her greatest personal moment as being awarded a Master of Arts degree in music at the ripe old age of 44.

Her experience in drama productions dates back to her school and college days where she took part in various roles both as a dancer and an actor. Cathi is a firm believer in the power of creativity and has presented research papers and keynote speeches at conferences all around Great Britain, Ireland and Canada.

As an occupational therapist, with the Manchester Learning Disability Partnership, Cathi co-founded the Celebrity Pig Theatre Company in 1997. Since 1998 she has been involved as coordinator and publicist for all the company's productions. In 2003 she first appeared on stage, in a supporting role to actor Barry Finan in ‘Hidden Voices,' at the Green Room, Manchester. She now returns to the stage at the Lowry Studio in her second supporting role as a ‘tea lady.'

Cathi's long-term vision for Celebrity Pig is for it to become a professional touring company with its own performance and rehearsal venue. She would also like to see the actors being cast in more TV and film productions.

 

Caroline Clegg – Artistic Director

Caroline started her career as a performer in West End musicals and now combines directing and producing with acting. Her most recent roles include Coronation Street, GTV, Doctors BBC, chief executive Joanna Hopkins in Holby City , and PA Thelma Cross in Longford due out in the autumn. She is well known for taking creative risks and is sought after as an innovator of adventurous and pioneering ventures . Caroline formed the award winning company Feelgood Theatre Productions in 1994 which specialise in site specific work. She has produced and directed all their shows in sites such as an aircraft hanger, a Zimbabwe township, a garden centre, a cliff top and numerous parks. Last year their production of Dracula – The Blood Count in Heaton Park terrified capacity audiences as they promenaded deep into the woods. This year King Arthur will make Heaton Park his Camelot. In November Not About Heroes opened at The Imperial War Museum North on Armistice Day and then went to The Cabinet War Rooms in London. It will tour once again in 2006 – 7. The company has won Manchester Evening News and City Life Theatre Awards and in 2004 the Lord Mayor of Manchester hosted a Civic Reception in recognition of their work.

Music and opera play an important part in Caroline's work. She works regularly for Opera North, was Staff Director at Welsh National Opera and directed for Opera Circus and Mecklenburgh Opera for the Covent Garden Festival. She directed Il Campanella at Buxton International Festival and conceived and directed Burning Waters , a new open-air promenade opera for the millennium. She directed the music theatre piece A Feast of Fables at the Bridgewater Hall, with Manchester Camerata and a flying conductor! Other engagements there include the Montserrat Caballe, Thomas Hampson and Kiri te Kanawa Galas with the Hallé Orchestra. .

Her flare for staging large scale prestigious events is well known; she directed Manchester's Millennium New Year's Eve event in conjunction with live BBC and the International Congress of Voice at the QE II Hall with Dame Janet Baker. Other spectacular events include the VE Day Celebrations, Lord Mayor's Ball, and the closing Gala at the Opera House, Manchester for the European City Year of Drama. Most recently she directed Carmen and Aida in Zurich and Hamburg in 10 000 seater arenas

Caroline has taught at Chethams School of Music and lectured at the Royal Academy and Royal Northern College of Music; directorial work included Nicola Lefanu's Dawnpath, The Story of Mary O'Neil (BBC broadcast), and Birtwistle's Down by the Greenwood Side (Manchester and Los Angeles) which won a Manchester Evening News Award for Best Opera.

She was named Lancashire Woman of the Year in 2005 and was awarded the John Thaw Fellowship at Manchester University in 2006.

Pat – Support Worker Done-to agency

Pat joined the company in 2005 as a support worker for Colette Wallace. In her spare time Pat enjoys craftwork, the theatre, socialising and meeting people from all walks of live. Her love of the performing arts stems from her experience in working with children in school productions.

Since working with Celebrity Pig, Pat has played an invaluable part in developing and devising the script for ‘Romeo and Juliet – a question of choice.' She has also used her energy and enthusiasm in supporting all the actors and in raising the profile of the company.

In her role as an employee from the ‘Done-to' Agency, Pat has drawn on her own personal experiences as a support worker, of many years, for people who are disabled.

 

Gillian – Jill -support worker from Done-to agency

Since Julie Sheridan joined the company Gillian has been supporting her to develop her skills and talents within the performing arts. In her spare time Gillian plays the guitar,

listens to music and enjoys socialising.

Gillian has appeared with the company in their short film, ‘The Making of Hidden Voices.' She has also taken part in the production, ‘Where is Pandora?' at the Pavilion Conference, ‘Learning Disability Today,' at the GMEX Convention Centre, Manchester.

For the role of support worker from the ‘Done-to' Agency, Gillian has worked alongside Artistic Director, Caroline Clegg, in devising the script for ‘Romeo and Juliet – a question of choice.' She was able to use her keen sense of humour and observation skills in bringing life to ‘Jill' from the ‘Done-to' Agency.
